Paris Morris, a recent graduate in Communication Arts, interned in Spring 2024 at Huntsville Magazine, an award-winning publication in the Huntsville area. In her own words, Paris Morris graciously shared her internship experience, emphasizing how her education in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences contributed to her success.

About the internship:

This internship has catapulted me into the professional world. As I started last summer, Takara [Editor in Chief of Huntsville Magazine] has allowed me to receive first-hand experience within Huntsville Magazine, preparing me for future career opportunities in the field. 

How my CAHS education helped:

CAHS has also provided me with valuable experience that will not only aid me in the professional setting, but in everyday life. I feel as if most people forget how valuable communication is and how useful the skill is, regardless of the task. CAHS has provided me with great connections and friends overall.

Writing Major, Erin Breeden recently interned at TekSouth, a Business Intelligence and Data Analytics company in the Huntsville area. In her own words Erin graciously discussed her internship experience and how her College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences education boosted her success. 

About the internship:

My internship experience with Teksouth has been very beneficial for my professional experience. As Teksouth's first paid intern I have been exposed to many different types of documents, specific to business proposals and business development. While my work initially started out as helping update Teksouth's content library, it has evolved into actively participating in meetings and technical reviews for outgoing proposals. Overall, my experience with Teksouth has been extremely valuable for my growth as a Technical Communicator.

How my CAHS education helped:

My education within CAHSS, more specifically the Technical Writing minor, has been invaluable for my internship at Teksouth. Without my Technical Writing and Editing classes I would not have the basis to know where to start on my assigned internship projects. Furthermore, my Writing about Science and Technology special topics class has been the basis of all of my work, since the documents I am working with are highly technical and I am translating the content into layman's terms. Also, Dr. Weber frequently emails students about different jobs and internships, and that is how I discovered the Teksouth internship. If I had not taken classes for the Technical Writing minor I would not have had the knowledge, or the confidence to work in the Technical Communication field.

About the Writing Major

The writing major prepares students for careers in writing-related fields, such as technical writing, publishing, social media consulting, and public relations, and/or for graduate school in rhetoric and composition, communication, creative writing, education, or law. Its curriculum comprises a combination of courses offered by both the English Department and the Communication Arts Department.

The Department of Art, Art History & Design鈥檚 annual juried student exhibition showcases exciting work from students across the disciplines. Departments within the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences presented research at national conferences this April, many alongside undergraduate and graduate students.

Communication Arts
Drs. Eletra Gilchrist-Petty, Xiaoti Fan, and John Saunders from the Communication Arts Department attended the Southern States Communication Association Conference April 3-7 in Frisco, Texas. Dr. Gilchrist-Petty received the Gender Studies Top Paper Award for her co-authored paper, 鈥淐ommunicating Who Belongs in Missing Person Alerts: A Fragment Analysis of Media Coverage of Ebony Alerts.鈥� She also performed officer duties as a member of the Legislative Assembly. Dr. Xiaoti Fan presented 鈥淓mbracing Connections: A Candid Conversation with ChatGPT on the Ethics of Deception鈥� and fulfilled officer duties as a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Dr. John Saunders presented 鈥淢aking Space for What Belongs: A Critical-Rhetorical Discussion on Instructional Discourses and Cultural Politics鈥� and 鈥淟ike a Rolling Stone: Can a Tribute Ban Provide any Satisfaction?鈥�. He also chaired and responded to multiple panels and fulfilled officer duties with the Popular Communication Division.

Sociology
All four Sociology faculty members and three undergraduate students attended the 2024 Southern Sociological Society conference in New Orleans, Louisiana April 3-7. Dr. Dan Morrison presented a paper on student perceptions of universities studying slavery; and Dr. Christina Steidl presented a paper on gendered creditalism and military service as pathways into STEM. Both Drs. Morrison and Steidl also served on professionalization panels and workshops for junior scholars and grad students. Dr. Thomson presented a paper examining the role of religion in the construction of responses to anti- Black police violence. Sociology major Fletcher Wilson and Sociology minor Rebekah Farris both presented papers analyzing gendered and sexualized aspects of Valentines Day; and Sociology major Jess Walter presented a poster based on their RCEU research on asexuality. Finally, Dr. Sims served as an advanced reader on an Author Meets Readers panel for a new book on Black feminism.

World Language and Cultures
Dr. Nicole Pacino from the Department of History and Drs. Leslie Kaiura and Cristhian Alfonso from World Languages and Cultures traveled to the Southeastern Council on Latin American Studies (SECOLAS) conference in Asheville, North Carolina. Dr. Pacino led a round table on the history of medicine and public health with Latin American historians from around the country. Dr. Kaiura presented a paper on feminism and femicide in two Argentine novels, and Dr. Alfonso presented part of his work on Nazis in 21st-century Colombian fiction.
